Therapy services
Dance movement therapy (DMT) combines elements of creativity with a psychosocial approach to therapy. It offers a unique approach by applying artistic, body-based techniques to achieve participants’ therapeutic goals.
DMT is used to help facilitate therapeutic growth and is appropriate for any age, ability, or stage of life; it is also a research-based profession with studies evidencing the benefits of dance, movement and somatic techniques for a variety of health concerns (some listed below). DMT is “based on the empirically-supported unity of body and mind” and “recognizes that change and growth in one supports change and growth in the other” (https://dtaa.org.au/therapy/). Dance therapists use verbal and non-verbal modes of communication to engage people in a therapeutic process. This approach can assist with the management and ongoing treatment of conditions such as:
· Mental health (anxiety, depression, and other psychosocial concerns)
· Physical conditions (persistent pain, injury, disability)
· Cognitive and neurological (Acquired brain injury, Alzheimer’s, autism, and other intellectual or sensory impairments)
· Stress management and trauma recovery (including PTSD)
· Recovery from substance use, disordered eating, and other forms of rehabilitation
